Structures suspected to be magnetic flux ropes are generated by radial foil Z-pinch with double-cathodes

摘要
The magnetic flux ropes (MFR), jets and prominence are typical phenomena in solar system. Pulsed-power facility was used to provide high energy density conditions that laboratory astrophysics research needs. Recently, some experiments were carried out on 10MA facility to study these astrophysical phenomena. The radial foil Z-pinch with single cathode post was used to simulated jet formation of young stellar jet. Jet velocity and length/radius are given. Meanwhile, the radial foil Z-pinch with double cathodes is used on 10MA facility to study the 3D magnetic reconnection(MR), where two magnetic cavities were produced by double cathodes to collide in the middle resulting in MR. Three-jet structures and x-type structure were found in experiments. Especially in the aluminum foil experiments, plasma loop structure was found. These loop structure are helical and suspected to be magnetic flux ropes that produced by the 3D MR.
The magnetic islands, which often appear in the two-dimensional (2D) magnetic reconnection with a single X-line[1-4], become magnetic flux ropes in 3D configuration where multiple reconnection sites (X-line) develop simultaneously[5]. This configuration generates a complex magnetic topology, enabling the formation of intertwined flux ropes with distinct helicity and plasma flows[6].
The electron number densities of loop and inflowing plasma are estimated. The velocity of inflowing plasma is about 100km/s, typical magnetic pressure is in order of 10GPa, and the corresponding Alfven Mach number is in range of 0.1-0.5 which indicates a fast MR process. The maximal temperature given by spectrometer is 780eV. The magnetic Reynolds number R_m, Lundquist number S, and the collision frequency \nu_{ie}/\omega_{ce} are also given. These results provide possibly new ideas to help researchers to understand the forming mechanism of solar prominence and MFR.
