Research Progress on High-Repetition-Rate Yb:YAG Solid-State Picosecond Laser Amplification Technology at Hundred-Millijoule and Above

High-energy (>100mJ) ultrafast solid-state lasers with repetition rates and picosecond-scale pulse duration, possess not only terawatt-scale peak intensities but also excellent beam quality, system reliability, and cost-efficiency, making it crucial in fields of advanced manufacturing detection, laser medicine, and scientific research. In terms of selecting gain media, besides titanium sapphire and neodymium-doped garnet, Yb:YAG (Yb:Y3Al5O12) has increasingly been adopted in diode-pumped solid-state picosecond laser amplifiers, thanks to its low quantum defect and broad emission bandwidth. We have reviewed the reported results of Yb:YAG solid-state lasers with repetition rates, operating at both room temperature and low temperature, delivering pulse energies of 100 mJ and picosecond pulse duration. This work summarizes crucial output parameters such as system efficiency, pulse energy, and beam quality, and explores their potential applications in high peak power generation, optical parametric amplification, and attosecond pulse generation.
