Internal erosion in soil induces the variation of basic soil properties such as the fines content (Chen et al. 2016), volumetric strain (Xiao and Shwiyhat 2012) and void ratio (Hu et al. 2019). While several studies have conducted seepage tests on unstable soils to investigate the changes in soil properties, limited study focuses on the effects of the confining pressure on the particle transportation. At the same time, few researchers have quantified the effect of cumulative fines loss on erosion-induced volume change. In this study, the predictive equations to quantify erosion-induced variations of basic properties such as the particle size distribution, the fines content, and the void ratio under different conditions are proposed and estimated results are compared with experimental results.
