The phenomenon of local scour due to horizontal jet issuing from sluice gate and flowing over an unprotected erodible bed has been investigated during this experimental study. Experiments were carried out for discharges ranging from 5.0 liters per second to 8.0 liters per second. Sluice gate opening was also varied from 1 cm to 5 cm. At sluice gate, the tail water depth is greater than the required for the formation of a free jump then submergence starts. The tail water conditions varies from low degree of submergence to higher degree of submergence leading to deep submergence to study the effect of submergence. Water is coming on the downstream side of sluice gate in the form of jet, vigorous erosion occurs in the erodible bed on the downstream side of the apron. All the sediment which is eroded on the downstream side of solid apron accumulates to form a dune further downstream. For the determination of maximums scour depth, densimetric Froude number with reference to sediment size is considered for all the results. During the experimentation, it was observed that at higher densimetric Froude number maximum scour depth(hs) is also larger.
