The mechanism underlying the impact of team voice on team performance: A team process perspective

Voice does not refer merely to the individual behavior of expressing suggestions, concerns, and ideas; it has also been recognized as a team-level phenomenon. However, our understanding of the potential pathways and boundary conditions associated with the impact of team voice on team performance remains insufficient. This study, which is based on the team process perspective and rooted in the cognitive theory of positive behaviors, explores the mechanism underlying the impact of team voice on team performance as well as the mediating role of job crafting and the moderating role of humble leadership in this relationship. The study employs a questionnaire survey method and analyzes matched data collected from 126 leaders and 963 employees. The results show that team voice has a positive impact on team performance via job crafting. Additionally, when humble leadership is low rather than high, the positive impact of team voice on team performance via job crafting is stronger. This study provides theoretical and empirical support from the perspective of the cognitive theory of positive behaviors with the goal of enhancing our understanding of how to improve employees' team voice and how to correctly recognize the effectiveness of humble leadership.
