Under the influence of both natural conditions and human activities, the downstream channels of the Three Gorges Reservoir face new challenges related to water-sediment dynamics and riverbed evolution, as well as the growing demand for multi-objective management of flood control, navigation, power generation, water supply, and ecological protection. It is imperative to conduct in-depth research on the patterns of water-sediment transport and river evolution downstream of the reservoir and to develop ecological governance technologies that integrate river management with ecological conservation. This paper reviews key research achievements in these areas and highlights current gaps in the research. Furthermore, it outlines the critical areas for future focus, including the spatiotemporal trends of water-sediment flux changes, feedback mechanisms between river channel reshaping and sediment transport in different river types, habitat restoration techniques for damaged riverbanks, ecological renovation methods for embankments, and eco-friendly river management strategies and technologies.
