Discussion and research on the backward flow in the Taiping outlet of Hudu River

Abstract:In recent years, the phenomenon of backward flow has frequently appeared in the Taiping outlet of the Four Outlets of the Jingjiang River. The average daily backward flow is up to 60m³/s, and the period of backward flow has gradually increased. In order to study the reasons and sources of backward flow, this article uses the monitoring data of control station of Hudu River and other related stations, and combines the Three Gorges Reservoir to comprehensively analyze the impact of the Four Outlets of the Jingjiang River. Studies have shown that the main reasons for the phenomenon of backward flow in the Taiping outlet of Hudu River are: (1)The scheduling of the Three Gorges Reservoir has caused the water level of the Jingjiang section of the Yangtze River to fall sharply. (2)The Hudu River is influenced by South Sluice and supporting of Dongting Lake.(3)Due to the increasing overflow capacity of the Songzi outlet, the east branch of the Songzi River inverted flow to Hudu River through the Zhonghekou. Analysis data shows that the strength of the backward flow is intertwined from the above three reasons, and the inverted flow effects under different conditions are also different. This article reveals the influencing factors of the backward flow phenomenon which appreared in the Taiping outlet of the Hudu River, clarify the main source of water volume, and has important guiding significance for the scientific and reasonable hydrological monitoring of the Four Outlets. Research results can provide basic data support for the comprehensive improvement of the rivernet area of Dongting Lake and regional water resources.
