Muti-scale Hydrodynamic processes of Water-vegetation Interfaces in Eco-rivers

The water-vegetation boundary is a key interface in eco-rivers and wetlands as it is the most biologically-active region. Different scales of vegetation, flow depths, and river morphologies may impact near-bed hydrodynamic and biological processes in multiple ways. To further study and comprehend the ecological role of water-vegetation interfaces, it is essential to establish a systematic description method of multi-scale vegetated bed flows. In this paper, the water-vegetation interface was classified into three scales: single vegetation scale, vegetation clump scale, and river scale. And up-scaling methods were proposed to address quantitatively the complex issues imposed by a high spatial variability of flow  across water-vegetation interfaces in varied scales. The findings demonstrate a strong interaction between the physical-biological characteristics of vegetation and its distribution with water flow. These findings have guiding significance for the ecological management of river course.
