The Pinglu Canal has numerous main and tributary channels along its original riverbed. After the construction of the canal, the tributaries along the original channel and the bottom of the canal have different degrees of drop. In the natural state, when these tributaries converge at the river junctions, there are significant adverse hydraulic phenomena, such as cross-flow and back-flow, which adversely affect the navigation safety and stability of the canal. In order to investigate the navigational flow conditions at the confluence of tributaries into the Pinglu Canal and clarify the hydraulic characteristics at the junction of the main and tributary streams, this study aims to simulate the flow characteristics at the confluence of Pinglu Canal based on a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model (TELEMAC-2D), and the reliability of the model is verified through measured data. Starting from the most unfavorable perspective, the study focuses on the navigational flow conditions at the confluence of the Pinglu Canal. Taking the Guangping River tributary as an example, the results indicate that, considering the worst-case scenario, by applying a 1:4 slope treatment to the Guangping River tributary and adopting standards for a 20-year flood for tributaries and a 5-year flood for the main channel, the maximum lateral flow velocity in the confluence area is 0.25 m/s, and the water surface fluctuation is minimal. A study on navigable flow conditions at the confluence of the Guangping River tributary by two-dimensional hydrodynamic model (TELEMAC-2D), the study concludes that the maximum lateral flow in the confluence area meets Navigation Standard of Canal. The TELEMAC-2D model demonstrates good applicability and can provide scientific support for the construction of the Pinglu Canal navigation channel.
