In order to reveal the starting rule of sediment in frozen state, natural sand and sediment samples in frozen state and non-frozen state were used as research objects to carry out the starting test of open channel flume. Data such as the height, water temperature, flow rate and sediment content of the samples were collected to study the starting process of sediment samples in different states. It is found that the melting speed of frozen test block in moving water is faster than that of sediment test block in still water.Due to the influence of ice in the frozen test block, the particle size of the frozen test block is finer and more uniform than that of the natural sand test block when starting up.Since the starting of frozen sediment occurs after the ice melts, the starting process of sediment in moving water is compared with that of natural sediment. Because the presence of ice delays the starting process of sediment, there is a delay between the change of sediment content in the frozen test block and the change of water velocity.
