Numerical Study on the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Regular and Irregular Waves Propagating over an Estuarine Compound Dike

Compound dikes are critical infrastructure for mitigating wave impacts in estuarine and coastal regions. Studying the effect of disaster waves on compound dikes is crucial for disaster prevention and mitigation in these areas. This paper utilizes numerical methods to simulate wave propagation in front of the compound dike, with a focus on analyzing the hydrodynamic characteristics of wave interactions with the structure. Initially, computational fluid dynamics software FLOW-3D is employed to establish an incompressible, non-reflective numerical wave flume for viscous flow based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. The wave generation performance of the flume is validated by comparing numerical results with theoretical predictions. Subsequently, simulation results of wave-structure interactions are compared with previous experimental findings, demonstrating good agreement and confirming the numerical model's capability to simulate wave interactions with structures accurately. Subsequently, numerical experiments were conducted based on the cross-section of an actual compound dike to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of wave interaction with the dike under extreme conditions, considering both regular and irregular waves. For regular waves, the focus was on analyzing the deformation of the free surface and changes in the internal flow field. For irregular waves, the study analyzed spectral changes and performed overtopping assessments. This research provides practical insights and offers scientific support for the engineering design and safety evaluation of estuarine and coastal compound dikes.
