Perspective on China-Myanmar water cooperation based on the Five-Year Plan of Action on the LMC (2023-2027)

Myanmar is endowed with abundant water resources. Only 40000 MW of an estimated potential of more than 100000 MW from the country's rivers has been developed. However, less than 4% of the tremendous potential of hydropower has been utilized. On analyzing current situation of Myanmar water resources characteristics and lightened on the Five-year Plan of Action on the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (2023-2027), the paper points out that China-Myanmar water cooperation has strong foundation and broad prospects and suggests water cooperation directions between the two countries in the next five years, including sharing information on water resources, strengthening hydropower development, implementing beneficial plans on Lancang-Mekong water resources, training on water resources talents and establishing exchange and cooperation mechanisms with non-governmental organizations.
