High voltage electric pulse (HVEP) is a novel fracturing technology. However, the characteristics of shock wave (SWs) generated by HVEP process are unclear. A self-developed HVEP equipment was used in completing the blasting experiment on a C30-grade concrete sample, and the research recorded the vibration results caused by the effect of SWs. The experimental results show that the HVEP can burst hard concrete samples, and the SWs generated propagate in every direction. The SWs are stronger in the horizontal direction than in the vertical. The peak particle velocity (PPV) decays to a relatively small value within 0.145 seconds, and the creation of cracks accelerates such decay. In addition, the study found that capacitance has a greater effect on HVEP than voltage. Increased capacitance can produce better rock breaking effects.
