The static two-dimensional format of the computer screen severely

limits exploring new topics on the web. Users need to use external

tools to organize and relate new concepts. Although offering immer-

sive 3D environments, VR browsers do not leverage the possibilities

of the 3D space. This paper presents VR PreM+, a pre-learning

branching visualization system in VR. PreM+ performs keyword-

based information retrieval and facilitates audiences to manipulate,

organize, and link multiple content sources in an immersive envi-

ronment. We apply PreM+ to the use case of planning a museum

visit. We first conduct a formative user study (N=24) to analyze the

shortcomings of current 2D and VR web browsers and define re-

quirements for pre-learning systems. Given the results of this study,

we design VR PreM+ to obtain information efficiently, arrange in-

formation according to the users’ needs, and promote engagement.

We evaluate PreM+ over a user study (N=18) and perform both

quantitative and qualitative. PreM+ halves the time spent looking

for information (348 s) compared to 2D and 3D browsers while

significantly increasing hedonic quality and presence. Following

semi-structured interviews, we developed three design guidelines

for future VR information retrieval systems, focusing on display,

interaction, and humanized design.
