摘要
The authors attempt to reveal the relationship between adults’ escorting and children’s travel mode to school, and the content is influenced by the household structure. Due to the differences between foreign countries and China in cultural background, facilities construction, geographical factors and other aspects, Chinese students and foreign students have different travel modes, especially in a unique household structure. This unique household structure includes grandparents, young parents and children, called ‘extended family’. We attempt to reveal the impact of ‘extended family’ on adults’ escorting and children’s travel mode to school. ‘Core family’ is another household structure which includes young parents and children. We use the 2013 Household Survey data in Haining, China. A Heckman probit model is used to explore the effect of household structure to adults’ escorting and children’s travel mode. The results show that there is a significant interaction between adults’ escorting and children’s travel mode to school. Household structure has a significant positive impact on adult’s escorting but has no significant impact on children’s travel mode. Adults in ‘extended family’ are more incline to escort their children to school than those in ‘core family’ and are more inclined to escort them to school by bicycle, while they are not inclined to escort them to school by car or bus, especially bus. When children go to school on foot, by bike and by motorcycle, adults in ‘extended families’ are more likely to escort them.
