摘要
In a modern city, illegal crossing (jaywalking) of pedestrians has a tremendous negative impact on traffic safety. Many pedestrian deaths and injuries are caused by jaywalking. At the same time, traffic efficiency drops dramatically as jaywalking causes more vehicle delays. This study develops a guidance system that can compensate time for pedestrians. The guidance system innovatively can significantly enhance the safety rate of pedestrians, which ultimately improves the entire road traffic safety and performance. The effectiveness of the system has been tested in a simulated two-way road. Simulation results reveal that the guidance system has a very prominent effect on correcting pedestrian crossing behavior. Almost all the pedestrians choose a legal and safe way to cross the road after applying the guidance system. Particularly, the growth rate of pedestrian crossing can be more than 20%. In addition, the average time that vehicles pass the selected road section can be decreased at the simulated level of vehicle volume. The highest reduction rate can be more than 34%. It proves that the system can not only promote safer crossing but can improve the operation efficiency of vehicles at the same time.
