Analysis of the physical and biogeochemical drivers of dissolved oxygen (DO) decrease in Celtic Sea under climate change

Key words: climate change, dissolved oxygen, shelf sea

Dissolved oxygen (DO) decline is a severe global issue impacting ocean productivity, biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, further devastating fisheries (Norris et al., 2013).  Oxygen decreasing rate in coastal water and shelf seas exceeds that of the open ocean (Gilbert et al., 2010), which provides ~20% of global marine primary production and over 90% of global fish catches. DO is controlled by physical and biological processes in the ocean biological processes produce oxygen by photosynthesis and consume oxygen via respiration and organic matter degradation (Queste et al., 2016). Physics processes induced vertical mixing to make the air-sea gas exchange, the establish of stratification prevents the vertical mixing (Figure 1) (Thomas & Bowers.,2012).
