At present, the ultrasonic method is widely used in the detection of partial discharge (PD) signals of transformers because of its strong anti-interference. The coupling optical fiber ultrasonic sensor (COFUS) has a simple manufacturing process, small structure and can be implanted inside the transformer, so it has a good research value in the detection of PD of transformers. In this paper, we compare the effects of different encapsulants on sensor performance through experiments. The results show that in the transformer oil with temperature change, the sensor encapsulated with better encapsulation adhesive can still maintain good performance. In addition, according to the common insulation defects of transformers, we made four typical PD defect models, then explores the response of the COFUS to different insulation defects. The results show that the PD ultrasonic signals generated by different insulation defects in the transformer have their own characteristics, so the corresponding faults of the transformer can be judged according to the different response results in the COFUS.
