The conventional monopulse method to estimate target direction of arrival (DOA) performs well when the power of target is high, however, its performance degrades seriously in strong clutter environment when the power of target is lower than that of clutter. This paper proposes a robust method to estimate DOA in strong clutter environment based on clutter suppression. Firstly, the proposed method adopts space-time adaptive processing (STAP) to suppress clutter in sub-array. Secondly, the sum and difference data are formed by the clutter suppressed sub-array data. Thirdly, the new discriminate function after clutter suppression is calculated. Finally, the ratio of difference to sum data after clutter suppression is compared with the new discriminant function, and the DOA is estimated. Since the proposed method reduces the influence of strong clutter when it estimates DOA, its performance in strong clutter is great. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
