This paper deals with the constrained design of the weighted coefficients to approximate a desired beampattern. A novel optimization model that maximizes the array gain subject to the mainlobe level, sidelobe level and weight amplitude constraints is proposed. An Alternating Direction Penalty Method (ADPM) formulation to tackle the resultant nonconvex problem is introduced. In each iteration, it decomposes the original problem into multiple tractable subproblems with closed-form solutions. The numerical results highlight that the ADPM algorithm is superior to the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm in terms of the achieved array gain and convergence.
