Migrant Worker; Medical Insurance Difference; Extended Blinder-Oaxaca Decomposition
Gender difference in the labor market remains a focus of public attention politically and academically. Migrant workers, especially females, are in a disadvantaged position in the urban labor market. In the paper, the gender difference in the urban medical insurance participation rate of migrant workers and the influential factors of the difference were analyzed using the data of China Migrants Dynamic Survey in 2011 and 2016. In 2011, the participation rate of male migrant workers in urban medical insurance was lower than that of female migrant workers. By 2016, the overall participation rate of migrant workers in urban medical insurance declined, but the gender difference showed a downward trend. And the extended Blinder-Oaxaca Decomposition further verified that the difference in employment distribution (women are in a disadvantaged position) caused the gap between males and females in medical insurance participation significantly narrowed.
