Physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology can modify the surface properties of equipment without changing the biomechanical properties of the substrate, and has been increasingly used in medical devices. According to the different objects and methods of medical device application, surgical instruments need wear resistance, high temperature sterilization and light reflection resistance. Implantable medical devices commonly used titanium alloy, cobalt chromium molybdenum, nickel titanium alloy and stainless steel materials, which remains in the body for a long time. Implant materials need to be resistant to body fluid corrosion, and have good biocompatibility, low ion release rate. Interventional medical devices need low friction, anticoagulation, and easy to form embolism. In view of the defects in the use of different medical devices, this paper reviews the development and application of PVD coatings in improving the performance of medical devices and prolonging their service life. TiN, CrN and ZrN coatings were the most widely used, with significant effects on improving the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and inhibiting ion release of the substrate. HA coating can effectively improve the biological activity of the substrate. Ta coating is harmless to the human body. It can improve the biocompatibility of the device and also has a good development effect. In addition, there are also Al, C, Nb, Cu doped coatings and DLC coatings that can improve the performance of different aspects for medical devices. The performance and application fields of different coatings are summarized, and the future development of new elements and related markets of PVD coating materials for medical devices are prospected.
