Establishing an accurate mechanical feedback system is a critical part of the surgical robot assistant system. Although reaming femoral medullary cavity with reamer in intramedullary nail fixation is very common, there is few relevant literature to study the biomechanical characteristics of reaming femoral medullary cavity. In this paper, we carried out in vitro experiments in pig femur on a precision NC lathe. The effects of processing parameters on extrusion force and reaming forces of femur were also investigated, including reaming speed, feed speed, diameter of reamers and reaming ways. The curve of the maximum reaming force can be divided into four different trends, including the empty process with stability at 0 N, the reaming process with exponential growth, the steady reaming process with linear growth, and reaming and extruding process with rapid growth. When the machining parameters are as follows: reaming speed of 250 r/min, feed speed of 60 mm/min, diameter of 11mm or 12mm, extrusion force and reaming forces are smaller; The experimental results reported in this paper could help to understanding the characteristic responses of reaming porcine femur in hip arthroplasty, and provided insight in developing the realistic force effect in the surgical simulators and improving the protection mechanism in the robot-assisted surgical system.
