Abstract The hosting of a mega event creates enormous demand for new build-ings and facilities and requires the development of new urban areas and infra-structure. Therefore, it needs considerable budgeting by government to finance the projects to build these new facilities. Notwithstanding this, the hosting of a mega event is an opportunity for the host country to attract investment for the construction of new buildings and facilities required for the event and it expedites the upgrading of its infrastructure and transportation network. The downside of hosting a mega event is its relatively short period and the financing pressures on the host country. The absence of integration with strategic and long term plan-ning of the country and holistic thinking while planning for the event, may expose it to the potential risk of losing the benefits of the massive investment and can re-sult in redundant infrastructure and facilities that become a legacy to waste. This chapter explores the conceptual elements adopted by Dubai Government and the Roads & Transport Authority of Dubai to deliver effective sustainable planning and metro route planning as a central design element in the development of Du-bai’s Expo 2020 to create a ‘smart city’ legacy.
