High Voltage Direct Current Circuit Breaker (HVDC CB) is the core element in the construction of DC power grid. Energy Absorption Path (EAP) has become an indispensable part of HVDC CB because of its function of absorbing residual energy and suppressing overvoltage. In this paper, based on the different types of HVDC CB in which EAP is located, the existing researches at home and abroad are summarized and sorted out, and then the characteristics of EAP energy absorption are explored. The energy absorption process of EAP in three different types of HVDC CB is simulated and compared. At the same time, the auxiliary functions of energy-absorbing elements in EAP design, such as voltage limiting, current limiting and timing control functions, are described and verified respectively. Finally, taking DC power grid as the application scenario, this paper introduces the EAP design of two different types of HVDC CB. On the basis of summarizing the existing EAP design methods, the bottleneck of design development is pointed out, and the future research trend is prospected.
