Synthesis and performance evaluation of MgAl2O4/stabilized CaO for CO2 capture

Development of highly effective CaO-based CO2 absorbent is important for their application in the calcium looping process. The promising CaO/MgAl2O4 combined nanosized sorbents of high CO2 capture capacity were synthesized using the novel sol-gel combustion synthesis method by two different preparation routes respectively. For parallel comparison, CaO/MgO and CaO/Al2O3 sorbents were also prepared by the same method. The CO2 capture performances of the as-prepared sorbents were tested in a fixed bed with two separate adiabatic reactors. The cyclic reactivity and stability of the sorbents during calcium looping reactions were conducted in details. Meanwhile, chemical phase composition of the sorbents over the different cycles of calcination and carbonation process were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicated that CaO/MgAl2O4 sorbents can be prepared by two-step synthsis, and the cyclic CO2 capture performance of MgAl2O4-stabilized CaO was higher than that of, CaO/MgO and CaO/Al2O3. and the stability of the synthetic sorbent is much higher than that of pure CaO under severe condition. Overall, it is indicated that MgAl2O4 support was an excellent material for the design of synthetic CaO sorbent during calcium looping process.
