The production of biodiesel was studied through esterification with the ionic liquid, pyridine bisulfate, as a catalyst. The effects of the reaction time, reaction temperature, catalyst dosage, and alcohol to acid molar ratio on the esterification reaction were studied. A mathematical model of the compound effects of the four factors on the esterification reaction was established via the fitting coefficient constant regression method. The optimal reaction conditions determined for the compound mathematical impact model were using the a 7:1 molar ratio of alcohol to acid, 35 mins reaction time, 7% catalyst consumption, and a reaction temperature of 80 ℃. In addition, the regression model with fitting of the coefficient constants was analyzed by factor and weight analysis. The influence of the four factors on the esterification reaction and the contribution of each factor to the experimental results under the optimum reaction conditions was determined. The results show that the calculated conversion value using the mathematical model was 99.86%, while the experimentally determined conversion rate was 99.42%; hence, the relative error was only 0.443%. In the range of experimental variables, the greatest single-factor influence on the variation of the conversion rate was for the catalyst usage. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the contributions of the four factors that could influence the reaction were in the order of temperature > alcohol to acid molar ratio > amount of catalyst > reaction time.
