Applications of the HTR-PM Engineering Simulator

Developing the engineering simulator is aimed at facing the challenges to establishing the full scope simulator for HTR-PM, which is the demonstration commercial nuclear power plant in China using HTGR technology. The key modeling technologies were broken through in the engineering simulator at first, including 3D space-time neutron kinetics, flow and heat transfer networks, and real time simulations. Then, the original source codes of such key models were implemented into the reactor core models of full scope simulator for HTR-PM, the performance of which was proved to be good enough to train and certificate the first batch of operators and senior operators of HTR-PM. Besides the training function, the engineering simulator has shown its multi roles in the designing and commissioning phases of HTR-PM. Different from system codes for designs or safety analyses, the HTR-PM engineering simulator is featured by more complete models of the whole nuclear power plant, coupled models of reactor core, primary systems, and secondary systems, and real time simulations. The engineering simulator was good at simulating various operating processes, which was important before finalizing the operating procedures and commissioning programs. For instance, the complete cold start-up process was simulated by the engineering simulator to indicate reasonable steps on the reactivity control parts, to coordinate primary and secondary loops, and to test the feasibility of operating procedures. More operating scenarios including the normal operation conditions and commissioning programs were also tested to enhance the confidences in the coming commissioning phase and operating phase of HTR-PM.
