Measurements of ambient nitrogen dioxide and aerosol optical properties including single scattering albedo using instrumentation based on cavity attenuated phase shift techniques are readily made. A description of the instruments and their applications to measurement of ambient atmospheric species will be presented. Aside from ambient monitoring, examples include measurement of: NO2 vertical profiles up to 6000 m altitude, soot emissions from jet aircraft engines and aerosol single scattering albedo in an isolated marine environment.
