Biomass gasification is an efficient and advanced technology, its resulting gas mixture (syngas), may be used for drying and heating, domestic cooking, power generating, and fuel/chemicals synthesizing. Over the past decades, there has been great progress in the development of biomass gasification technologies in China, but problems such as low gasification efficiency, high tar content, slagging etc. still exist. In recent years, with the increasing demand for clean energy and atmospheric environmental protection, gasification has been regarded as a promising technology for converting low-grade biomass waste into easy-to-use energy products (clean gas), and reducing the pollution of waste treatment process. This paper summarizes the status of biomass gasification technology and details the benefits and limitations of different technologies. Firstly, the characteristics of different biomass waste are analyzed; Secondly, the research hotspots related to gasification technology (e.g., pretreatment, gasification, gas cleaning up) are pointed out; Thirdly, the current status of gasification application technologies (e.g., combined heat and power, substituting boiler/kiln fuel, synthesizing liquid fuels/chemical, coupling of biomass gasification and coal fired generating unit) are introduced; Finally, the current challenges facing the field of gasification and the future outlooks of this technology are presented.
