Hydrothermal conversion of biomass waste for value added chemicals and materials

Hydrothermal conversion of biomass waste for value added chemicals and materials is a promising environment friendly option for renewable energy and resource utilization. Based on the concept of biorefinery applying hydrothermal process, the production of bio-oil, bio-based chemicals and carbon materials is likely to achieve an integrated utilization of biomass waste and for environmental management simultaneously. Hydrothermal process degrades and converts biomass waste into bio-oil with high energy content. Here, we will report the research progress on hydrothermal conversion of biomass waste for resource recovery at Fudan University in recent one year. There are three parts: (1) Conversion of biomass in to small molecular compounds, xylose and cellulose acetate. Optimizing xylose production from pinewood sawdust through dilute phosphoric-acid hydrolysis was investigated by response surface methodology. A novel process for obtaining high quality cellulose acetate from green landscaping wastes was got. (2) Separation of small molecular compounds from hydrolysates. Glucose, xylose and arabinose from lignocellulosic hydrolysates was separated efficiently by using cation exchange resin. (3) Hydrochar activation for carbon materials. Demethanation trend of hydrochar induced by organic solvent washing: implications to hydrochar activation for pollutant adsorption. CO2 activation promotes available carbonate and phosphorus of antibiotic mycelial fermentation residue-derived biochar support for increased lead immobilization. Carbon transmission of CO2 activated nano-MgO carbon composites enhances phosphate immobilization.
