The Law and Mechanism of Dynamic Methane Diffusion from Coal Particles under Different Moisture Content

Moisture content is one of the key influence factors upon emission rules of coal particles containing gas. The variation law of diffusion flux, diffusion coefficient and diffusion speed with moisture content was experimentally studied based on self-designed equipment. The results show that diffusion flux and diffusion speed decrease significantly with increasing moisture content up to equilibrium moisture content. According to mathematical model of coal particles containing gas, diffusion coefficients of three rank coal particles were calculated. The results show diffusion coefficient decrease with gaseous water improving. Diffusion coefficient of dry coal particles is 3~5 times as big as that of coal particles with equilibrium moisture content under the same rank coal particles. According to migration theory in porous medium, initial mass concentration and diffusion coefficient are decreased by improving moist content, which reduces diffusion speed. Water molecules occupies more readily adsorption sites than methane molecules, so adsorption flux of methane reduces. Multilayer adsorption can take place for water molecules, which may block surface diffusion of some methane molecules, and reduce diffusion path, and increase diffusion resistance. The research results provide the theoretical basis for gas disaster prediction, prevention and exact determination of the coal seam gas and gas desorption index by drill cuttings.
