This paper found that the influence of spatial distance on knowledge spillovers was not obvious by analyzing the spatial diffusion of invention patents of solar energy in 1985-2016 in two regions of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Pearl River Delta. The paper introduced spatial distance from spatial econometrics and empirically tested the spatial diffusion process of knowledge spillovers, and found that absorptive capacity and economic gap among cities were the main influencing factors of spatial knowledge spillovers, and spatial distance was not the most important factor, and even pollution control didn't pay a role for knowledge spillovers.
