GaN-based power switches provide a step-change in the efficiency of offline power conversion. This has allowed the elimination of heatsinks and consequently a substantial reduction in power supply size and weight. Subtler benefits such as increased resistance to line voltage surges are beginning to be exploited, increasing the range of applications employing the new technology.
