In view of changing landscape of risks especially in the twenty first century, there is an urgent need to emphasize on decoupling or the ability of an economy to grow without a detrimental effect on the environment. The role of business in contributing to such growth is crucial. In fact, business is increasingly being viewed by the government, consumers, investors, and the society in general as a powerful force in promoting sustainable development as it is realising the importance of integrating sustainability into business strategies and operations. Managers across sectors- public, private and not for profit are attempting to maintain a balance between three dimensions of sustainability i.e. people, planet and profits. The future lies with companies which that internalize stakeholder inclusivity, resource efficiency, and environmental conservation as key elements in their core business principles and contribute to economic development without negative influences on the environment. However, bringing about such systemic change is not an easy task and inherently demands a change in the mindset of stakeholders.
A plethora of research studies, and global and national debates and discussions over the past three decades have reinforced the business case for sustainability, and the recent launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has unleashed new frameworks for business to prioritize and implement strategies for economic growth. But there is a need to further explore the business case, identify opportunities, and understand frameworks to become a part of the sustainable development agenda.
In this backdrop of a need to share research and knowledge on sustainable business models, strategies and practices that contribute to economic growth decoupled from harmful impacts on the environment, the Department of Business and Sustainability, TERI University is organising an International Conference on Business, Economics and Sustainable Development. The conference aims to bring together stakeholders including academia, industry, government, to discuss the need, challenges, and roadmap to approach long-term viability of business without compromising on profitability, competitiveness, and sustainable development.
